Connecting with Kids - Holiday Edition

For many families, the 2022 holiday season will be the first time in a few years that extended families are gathering in-person. There is a tremendous opportunity with holiday gatherings for adults to connect with kids and teens.

Conversation starters are a great way to quickly connect. Questions adults can ask to communicate and connect with youth include:

  1. What music do you listen to?
  2. What show have you been watching?
  3. What book have you read lately?
  4. What's your favorite food that our family makes?
  5. What is the weirdest food you have ever eaten? Where and when did you eat it?
  6. What's the funniest movie you have watched?
  7. If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?
  8. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?
  9. What's the best thing that has ever happened to you?
  10. What's your ultimate Yes Day? What would you be doing? Who would be with you?

If conversation doesn't seem to flow, activity can be another way to build connection. Activity and game suggestions include:

  • Going for a walk
  • Watching a movie together
  • Making hot cocoa
  • Playing a game - Would You Rather, Apples to Apples, Trivia
